Ca. 70 m to the W is the Meadow River. In between the plot and the river is an old railgrade. The railgrade is heavily traveled by ATV's. There is an old Rd. grade which we travelled starting at US Rt. 19, which travels down in the gorge and connects with the railgrade. Upriver at the top of the Gorge are several large rock faces. Lots of climber's trails and magnesium chalk on rocks.;Large moss covered colluvial boulders on lowslope above the Meadow River. Low diversity forest of Hemlock-Sweet birch/Rhododendron maximum. The forest here is cool, shady and somewhat moist. Allowing for a high cover and diversity of bryophytes. The boulders are probably the result of the erosion of the "rim rock" at the top of the gorge. The plot is situated in a rock "bowl". Lots of littered covered voids between boulders.
Representativeness
Large patch of colluvial boulder field forest of TsCa-BeLe/Rhododendron maximum. Similar to patches of forest I have sampled along higher elevations with Betula alleghaniensis replacing the Betula lenta. I believe this community will make up the matrix
